Back to Squamish’s Future
Squamish’s Robert Forsyth wants to recreate a modern-day version of the 1990s Squamish Trades Fair. That fair included beauty pageants, vendors and loads of balloons, he said, and this one will keep the “family values” of the past with a 2015 flavour.
The two-day Squamish Business and Trade Show 2015 in May will include local trades, retailers, suppliers, vendors and non–profit societies.
“Industry and business, commerce and residents – there is a common ground with all of them and that is family values,” Forsyth said.
“I want to collaborate the community so they are networking,” he said. “So they are not just sending each other emails, they are actually talking and passing phone numbers and saying, ‘If you have something important to discuss we can work together.’”
The ultimate goal, Forsyth said, is to create a post-secondary trade school in Squamish, and by bringing all the stakeholders together in one room, the resurrection of the tradeshow is one step towards the school becoming a reality.
“The whole purpose of all of it is to show there is enough of a resource base to warrant the education and possibly the development of a trade school in Squamish,” he said. “A trade school would provide us a place for families to really come here and nestle down. So they are here from kindergarten to graduation and then right out of graduation into some sort of trade or health-related [academic institution].”
The show will be held at Brennan Park Recreation Centre arena on Friday, May 15 and Saturday, May 16.
Details are still being hammered out and more sponsors are needed.
